Anthony Mackie was born in New Orleans on September 23, 1978, where he attended Warren Easton Senior High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts before studying at Juilliard, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in drama in 2001. His early films included 8 Mile, in which he played Papa Doc, and Brother to Brother, in which he portrayed a young visual artist. He played John Armstrong in Spike Lee’s She Hate Me, working with an ensemble that included Kerry Washington and Ossie Davis.
On Broadway, Mackie appeared in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom with Whoopi Goldberg and Drowning Crow with Alfre Woodard. In a 2004 Blackfilm interview, he described theatre as his foundation and discussed choosing roles that challenged him. He also spoke about learning to respond to other actors within a scene instead of treating a performance as an individual showcase.
Mackie later took over the role of Sam Wilson in Marvel’s films, and in the 2025 film Captain America: Brave New World he carried the shield as the title hero. Directed by Julius Onah, the film paired him with Harrison Ford and earned more than $400 million worldwide.
Away from acting, he has put resources behind the city that raised him: in 2022, he announced plans for a roughly twenty-acre film and television studio in New Orleans East, to be based under his company East Studios LLC, adding to producing credits that include The Banker and Outside the Wire. The project was pitched as a way to bring production work and jobs to a part of the city that had little of either.
Brave New World opened in February 2025 with a four-day domestic debut projected above $90 million.
