Giancarlo Esposito was born on April 26, 1958, in Copenhagen, to an Italian father from Naples and an American mother, an opera and nightclub singer from Alabama. He has described himself as part Italian and part African American, and as a Black man in America. He lived in Rome until he was five, then grew up in Manhattan, where he made his Broadway debut at ten, playing a child in the 1968 musical Maggie Flynn. As a boy he also sang in the original theme for The Electric Company and appeared on Sesame Street.
His screen work includes Buggin’ Out in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and Gus Fring in Breaking Bad, alongside roles in Lee’s School Daze, Mo’ Better Blues and Malcolm X. School Daze, in 1988, was his breakout, and the Lee collaborations continued across four films. Other film work has ranged from The Usual Suspects to Megalopolis and Captain America: Brave New World.
Gus Fring, the measured drug kingpin of Breaking Bad, ran from 2009 to 2011 and became the role Esposito is most identified with; he reprised it in Better Call Saul from 2017 to 2022. The performance brought two Critics’ Choice Television Awards and three Emmy nominations. On The Mandalorian, he played Moff Gideon from 2019 to 2023, earning two more Emmy nominations, and on The Boys he has played the calculating Stan Edgar since 2019. He also portrayed Adam Clayton Powell Jr. in Godfather of Harlem.
Esposito’s theatre work includes Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with James Earl Jones, Phylicia Rashad and Terrence Howard, directed by Debbie Allen. He has also directed and appeared in Gospel Hill. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored him with a Television star on its Walk of Fame in April 2014.
In a 2025 interview with TheWrap, Esposito discussed playing Stan Edgar in The Boys and described a continuing sense of curiosity about acting. He also said he asks collaborators directly for the opportunities that matter to him.
