Lloyd H. Dean's career took him from teaching and broadcasting into the management of major health systems. Raised in Muskegon, Michigan, he worked at the pharmaceutical company Upjohn and later became an executive at Advocate Health Care. CommonSpirit Health, his eventual employer, counts him among the leading Black chief executives in American health care.
Dean studied sociology and education at Western Michigan University. His professional biography at the University of Southern California records executive work in Upjohn's Health Care Services Division, followed by service as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Advocate.
He led Dignity Health, previously Catholic Healthcare West, for nineteen years before its February 2019 combination with Catholic Health Initiatives created CommonSpirit Health. Dean initially shared the chief executive role with Kevin E. Lofton, who had led Catholic Health Initiatives. After Lofton retired in June 2020, Dean became the combined organization's sole chief executive, and his early years in that seat included managing through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dean also backed partnerships intended to broaden medical training. CommonSpirit committed $100 million over ten years to work with Morehouse School of Medicine on opportunities for Black clinicians and culturally competent practitioners.
He retired from CommonSpirit in 2022; its August 1 announcement confirmed that Wright L. Lassiter III had begun as his successor. His board service also included a seat on McDonald's board of directors.
