Stephen Curry played basketball at Davidson College from 2006 to 2009 under coach Bob McKillop. The team reached the NCAA tournament's Elite Eight in 2008. He left college for professional basketball before completing his degree, beginning a career that would make his name familiar far beyond the small North Carolina campus.
The Golden State Warriors selected him seventh in the 2009 NBA draft. With the Warriors, he won four NBA championships and received the league's Most Valuable Player award twice. The championships record a team's success, while the MVP awards recognize his individual contribution. His basketball record also gave him a public stage for interests beyond the court.
One of those interests was golf. In 2019, Curry committed support for Howard University's golf program over six years, helping the university begin Division I competition in the sport. In July 2023, he won the American Century Championship. Speaking afterward, he explicitly identified himself as a Black athlete and discussed expanding access to golf. He credited his own family's resources and access to facilities, acknowledging advantages that not every young player has.
He also returned to academic work. Curry completed a bachelor's degree in sociology in May 2022. Davidson celebrated him at an August ceremony that combined presentation of his diploma, retirement of his jersey number and induction into its athletics hall of fame, thirteen years after he entered the NBA.
In Oakland, Stephen and Ayesha Curry launched Eat. Learn. Play. in 2019. Its work addresses children's access to food, reading support and places to play. The foundation describes both individual support, including literacy tutoring, and changes to school spaces such as libraries and playgrounds. Its work involves staff and community partners as well as its two founders.
