Christian McBride is a Black American bassist, arranger and educator born in Philadelphia in 1972. He began playing bass at nine, supported by a father and great-uncle who also played the instrument. He attended Philadelphia's High School for Creative and Performing Arts before moving to New York for classical study at Juilliard in 1989.

His professional education started almost immediately. Heralded as a teen prodigy, he joined saxophonist Bobby Watson's band Horizon at seventeen, a tour that introduced McBride to professional jazz life. He left Juilliard and continued learning through work with active musicians. His career grew to include his own recordings as a bandleader and collaborations with artists such as Chick Corea, Chaka Khan and Joe Henderson. In 2015 he won the Grammy for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for his rendition of "Cherokee."

Institutional leadership became another part of the work. In March 2016, McBride was named artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival, succeeding the festival's founder, George Wein, who had picked him to guide the event he had run for decades. McBride became the festival's second artistic director and the first African American to hold the post. His work extends across acoustic and electric bass, arranging, ensemble leadership and education, and his early family influences remained part of a broad musical background: in a 2025 interview, he recalled growing up with Motown, Gamble and Huff, jazz and classical music.

In that interview, McBride discussed Without Further Ado: Volume 1, a recording with his big band and guest performers including Sting and Andy Summers. In 2026, the Recording Academy awarded the album the Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. The project continued a career built around working with other musicians while developing his own voice as a leader.
