Farad Ali's career connects the ownership of a technology business with work in local government and education. A Minority Business News Texas profile places him among African American business owners and describes his acquisition of majority ownership in Asociar. His earlier path ran from Brooklyn, New York, to Durham, North Carolina, where he attended public school and later served on the city council.
Finance came first. EducationNC reports that he landed a summer banking internship through INROADS, a career-development organization, and then worked as a banker for more than a decade. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA at Campbell University; a later university announcement also records executive education courses, distinct from his degrees.
Ali served on Durham City Council from 2007 to 2011 and led the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development. In 2013, he worked with a task force concerned about educational opportunity, supporting a proposed academy for young men in Durham's public schools.
In 2020, Ali acquired a majority stake in Asociar, an information-technology and supply-chain company that Betty Manetta had built earlier through a venture involving Fujitsu Network Communications. A 2023 business profile described work including equipment, installation and technology services.
His public institutional work later included federal procurement advice. In September 2022, the General Services Administration listed him, affiliated with Asociar, among the inaugural members of its Acquisition Policy Federal Advisory Committee, whose initial assignment concerned climate and sustainability in federal purchasing. North Carolina Central University announced his appointment to its board of trustees in July 2025, on a four-year term beginning July 1.
