Jeffrey Wright is a Black American actor whose work includes Belize in the Broadway production and HBO adaptation of Angels in America. Playing Norman “Belize” Arriaga in Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play in 1993 and 1994 brought Wright his first major recognition and a Tony Award, with the Television Academy recording his Emmy win for the HBO adaptation in 2004. The role asked him to portray a gay Black nurse and former drag queen working through the AIDS crisis, a performance that established his reputation for layered character work.
Wright portrayed Jean-Michel Basquiat in Basquiat, the 1996 film about the painter directed by Julian Schnabel, with a cast that included David Bowie as Andy Warhol. He played Felix Leiter in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, and Beetee in The Hunger Games films. His television roles include Valentin Narcisse in Boardwalk Empire and Bernard Lowe in Westworld.
In 2023, he took the lead in American Fiction, Cord Jefferson’s satire about a novelist tired of publishing stereotypes. The performance brought his first Academy Award nomination, in the leading-actor category at the 2024 ceremony, and the film was itself nominated for Best Picture. Jefferson won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the same film.
In an interview with Ynetnews, Wright identified himself as Black and described his willingness to work with performers of different backgrounds when they share an interest in telling a story.
