John David Washington is a Black American actor born in Los Angeles on July 28, 1984, the son of actors Denzel Washington and Pauletta Washington. He made his name first on the football field: at Morehouse College he set the school’s single-game, single-season and career rushing records, including a school-record 1,198-yard season in which he led his conference in rushing, before signing as a free agent with the St. Louis Rams. Professional football took him to the Rams’ practice squad, to NFL Europe with the Rhein Fire, and to the United Football League before injuries ended that career.

In 2015, he won the role of Ricky Jerret, an NFL player, in the HBO comedy-drama Ballers, appearing alongside Dwayne Johnson. His subsequent film work includes Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, in which he portrayed Ron Stallworth, the Black police detective who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. That performance earned a 2019 Golden Globe nomination for lead actor in a drama film.

Washington also starred in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and appeared in Monsters and Men, Malcolm & Marie and Amsterdam. These roles placed him in historical drama, science fiction and stories built around intimate relationships, working with different directors and fellow performers.

In 2024, he played Boy Willie in The Piano Lesson, the film adaptation of August Wilson’s play directed by his brother Malcolm Washington. He had already spent four months playing the same part in the play’s recent Broadway production before carrying the character to the screen. In a 2020 interview about Tenet, he recalled being turned down for other large film projects and said opportunities from directors he admired widened his sense of what was possible for him as an actor.
