John Legend grew up in Springfield, Ohio, and entered the University of Pennsylvania at sixteen. A university account of his conversation with scholar Camille Charles describes his development through campus singing and Philadelphia's music community. He graduated in 1999, and both the formal study and the musical relationships formed around it became part of his career.

His first professional credit came from behind the scenes: while still a teenager he played piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything," an early sign of the session and studio skills that supported his later work.

His recording career included *Get Lifted* in 2004, released on Kanye West's GOOD Music label with West as executive producer and co-producer, *Once Again* in 2006 and *Evolver* in 2008. Penn's professional biography places those releases within a career that later expanded into producing and performing for other media.

One shared achievement came through the film *Selma*. At the 2015 Academy Awards, the Oscar for original song went to "Glory." The Academy lists its music and lyrics under the names John Stephens and Lonnie Lynn, the artists publicly known as John Legend and Common. In September 2018, Legend became an EGOT recipient, having won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards, and Guinness World Records identifies him as the first African American man to achieve that combination. The Emmy that completed the set recognized his work as a producer of *Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert*; his acting nomination for that production was a different category.

Producing has also involved partners. Penn's account names Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius alongside Legend in their film work. It documents his FREEAMERICA initiative, launched in 2015 around criminal justice issues, and another university account discusses his Show Me Campaign and educational concerns. Education and opportunity run through the advocacy as much as the music, and Legend keeps bringing both into his conversations with students and scholars.
