Ryan Coogler grew up in Oakland, California, and attended Saint Mary’s College on a football scholarship. After the college ended its football program, he transferred to Sacramento State, studying finance while taking film classes, and caught passes as a wide receiver: his 112 career receptions rank fourth in Hornet football history, and he was a three-time winner of the Big Sky Conference all-academic award. In a 2012 interview with Filmmaker, he recalled a writing teacher encouraging him to consider screenwriting. He graduated in 2007 with a degree in business administration and finance.

He continued into filmmaking at the University of Southern California and made short films. By the time of that early interview, he was developing Fruitvale through the Sundance Screenwriters Lab. He described researching the life of Oscar Grant, a young unarmed Black man killed by a BART transit policeman at an Oakland station on New Year’s Day 2009, and getting to know Grant’s family while writing. He also spoke about his work counseling young people at San Francisco’s juvenile hall.

Fruitvale Station, released in 2013, won both the Grand Jury and Audience awards at Sundance and captured the Prize of the Future at Cannes.

He co-wrote and directed Black Panther, released in 2018, with an ensemble including Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o and Michael B. Jordan. The Smithsonian acquired a costume, script material and photographs connected with the production, and credits costume designers Ruth Carter and Judianna Makovsky for distinct versions of the Panther suit.

At the 2026 Academy Awards, Coogler won the original-screenplay Oscar for Sinners, a film released in 2025. The Academy also listed the film’s Best Picture nomination under producers Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Ryan Coogler.
