Sterling K. Brown was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 5, 1976, and grew up in nearby Olivette. He arrived at Stanford in 1994 intending to study economics and enter business. Performing in August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone helped him reconsider that direction. He graduated with a drama degree in 1998 and earned an MFA at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2001.

His professional work developed through film, stage and television roles. The Television Academy’s biography records seven seasons playing Dr. Roland Burton on Army Wives, alongside appearances on other series.

In 2016, Brown won an Emmy for supporting actor in a limited series or movie for playing Christopher Darden in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. The following year, his performance as Randall Pearson on This Is Us earned the drama lead-actor award, and the same role brought him a Golden Globe.

Brown returned to Stanford to deliver its 2018 commencement address. The university’s account explicitly identifies him as African American and describes his discussion of purpose, exploration and the impossibility of achieving perfect work.

His screen career later brought an Oscar nomination for supporting actor in American Fiction at the 2024 ceremony, along with nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, Critics’ Choice and the Independent Spirit Awards for the same performance. Television work also continued: in Paradise, he plays a Secret Service agent responsible for protecting a president played by James Marsden, and the Television Academy records acting and executive-producing nominations for the series in 2025 and 2026.
