Sam Pollard is a Black American film editor, documentary director and producer, born in Harlem, who began his editing career in 1972 after taking courses in a workshop organized by WNET. He earned a degree at Baruch College in 1973 and learned the craft assisting editor George Bowers, with the filmmaker St. Clair Bourne as a mentor.

Pollard edited several Spike Lee films, including Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Clockers and Bamboozled. He and Lee also co-produced Four Little Girls, Lee’s documentary about the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, which brought both men an Academy Award nomination for documentary feature in 1998. He edited episodes of the landmark civil rights series Eyes on the Prize, and in 2010 won a Primetime Emmy for picture editing for By the People: The Election of Barack Obama. His work as a producer and director includes Slavery by Another Name and August Wilson: The Ground on Which I Stand. Spike Lee has called him “a master filmmaker,” and Henry Louis Gates Jr. has said his documentaries add up to a way of telling African American history in its various dimensions. In 2020, the International Documentary Association gave him its first Career Achievement Award.

In a 2023 PBS interview about The League, his documentary on Negro league baseball, he described researching the players, owners and communities behind the teams. He explained that he wanted audiences to understand African American experience as part of American history, and emphasized the value of looking beyond familiar heroes to the businesses and neighborhoods that sustained Black baseball. That research brought him new perspectives on a sport he had followed since childhood.

Pollard teaches at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he received the school’s 2018-19 Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2026, he was selected as president of the Main Competition jury at the BFI London Film Festival.
