Shaboozey, born Collins Obinna Chibueze, is a Black American musician raised in Woodbridge, Virginia, by Igbo Nigerian parents. His early listening included hip-hop and R&B, while his father, a farmer in Nigeria before immigrating, played country music at home. In a 2026 interview, he described Prince as an inspiration for making music without conforming to a prescribed image.

His single "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated July 13, 2024, his first chart-topper. It went on to tie the record for the most weeks at number one in the chart's history, matching the nineteen-week run of "Old Town Road." The recording interpolates J-Kwon's 2004 song "Tipsy," placing earlier hip-hop material within a new country-oriented arrangement. While topping the Hot 100, the song also held the top of the Hot Country Songs chart; no song by a Black man, or one known to be biracial, had previously topped both charts, and Shaboozey was the second Black artist overall to do it, after Beyoncé's "Texas Hold 'Em."

Shaboozey told Billboard that the song developed collaboratively: he had been wanting to flip a 2000s song, a lyric idea led to a producer picking up the guitar and playing chords, and they kept writing together. In the same year, he appeared on Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tracks "SPAGHETTII" and "SWEET HONEY BUCKIIN'." Those recordings connect his work to other performers, writers and producers across the two genres.
