Dwyane Wade was born in Chicago in 1982 and played college basketball at Marquette University. Miami selected him in the 2003 NBA draft. Three years later, he helped the Heat win their first championship and received the Finals' Most Valuable Player award.

Wade won Olympic gold with the United States in 2008. In Miami, he joined LeBron James and Chris Bosh on the teams that won consecutive championships in 2012 and 2013. He finished with three NBA titles and thirteen All-Star selections, and entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.

His official biography records that he retired after the 2018-19 season, following sixteen years in the NBA, with a return to Miami after playing for Chicago and Cleveland. His later public work included producing films: the biography credits him on the animated short Hair Love and as an executive producer of A Most Beautiful Thing, about an African American high-school rowing team.

Wade also joined other athletes in speaking about racial injustice. In 2016, he appeared at the ESPYS with Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James. Andscape's account identifies the four as African American men and describes their shared public statement.

The Wade Family Foundation describes its purpose as providing resources and opportunities for young people in underserved communities. Its public account identifies racial justice and LGBTQ equality as parts of Wade's advocacy. It also describes Spotlight On, an initiative launched in 2016 to recognize young people working to improve Chicago, with the emphasis on drawing attention to those young people's own efforts. The same account records support for Parkland students through March for Our Lives and a Parkland 17 art exhibit.

His official biography also credits Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony as co-founders with him of Social Change Fund United.
