Paul Judge studied computer science at Morehouse College before earning a master's degree and doctorate at Georgia Tech. The university records the graduate degrees in 2001 and 2002. His later career has combined cybersecurity research with the responsibilities of developing companies and investing in other founders.
His professional biography documents a sequence of technical leadership roles. He was chief technology officer at email-security company CipherTrust, which Secure Computing acquired in 2006. He then served as chief technology officer and senior vice president at Secure Computing. In 2007, he founded web-security company Purewire, where he again held the chief technology role. Barracuda Networks acquired Purewire in 2009.
Judge later worked as Barracuda's chief research officer and vice president, including the period of its 2013 initial public offering. His other ventures have included the home-networking company Luma Home and the voice-security company Pindrop.
Pindrop's current leadership page identifies Judge as executive chairman and co-founder. It names Vijay Balasubramaniyan as chief executive and co-founder and Mustaque Ahamad as chief scientist and co-founder. The company works on identity and fraud detection in communications, analyzing calls to distinguish real customers from impostors.
Judge's work as an investor has also included Panoramic Ventures. Georgia Tech's February 2023 profile describes its creation with BIP Capital in 2021 and its interest in founders who have had less access to funding. The article places Judge within its Black Atlanta Change-Makers feature and discusses his role as a mentor.
In December 2023, Open Opportunity Fund announced a shared leadership arrangement involving Judge and Marcelo Claure. Judge was chairman and managing partner; Claure was vice chairman and general partner. In that announcement, Judge described the significance he saw in a fund led by a Black American and a Bolivian immigrant, and the fund's stated work with Black and Latino founders.
Pindrop's technology analyzes the audio characteristics of a phone call to detect fraud, and its customers include banks and other institutions that verify callers by voice.
The pattern across his companies is consistent: identify a security problem in a specific communication channel, build the technology to address it and carry the company to an acquirer or a lasting market position.
